Disclosure: I was provided tickets to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s Out Of This World to facilitate my review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
When I was a little I remember my dad taking me to the circus. I remember having to drive downtown to get there, feeling very small as we walked into the very large venue, being mesmerized by the clowns and the animals, and leaving with a souvenir plastic animal that I carried over my shoulder on a stick. I chattered to my dad about the circus all the way to the car and then on the way home and then again at bedtime. The circus was all I could talk about for days (maybe weeks?). I couldn’t have been more than 5 or 6 years old, and yet I remember that day vividly. So when I heard that the circus was coming to town, I couldn’t wait to create similar memories for my own kids.
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s brand new show “Out Of This World” landed at Miami’s American Airlines Arena on Friday, January 6, and will stay in town until Sunday, January 15, 2017. The show features a classic tale of good versus evil with a cosmic twist, while being the first of kind in that it happens on ice. As the show starts, an evil queen gathers the circus stars and then scatters them across the entire galaxy. It’s then up to ringmaster Johnathan and star-seeker Paulo to bring them back to Earth with the help of a magical, star-seeking telescope. As the performers are found, their talents are displayed and they are sent back to Earth to rejoin the others.
Just like the circus that I remember as a kid, this show has amazing acrobats, lions, tigers, and, of course, clowns, but there was more. In addition to those classics from my childhood, there were ice skaters, motorcyclists, and equestrians…there was even a kangaroo! There’s so much packed into this show, I couldn’t believe it. And within about a minute, my kids were hooked!
But the thing that really surprised me about Out Of This World was the story. I really didn’t expect there to be a story line to follow, let alone a well developed story. This show will have you cheering for the heros and booing the villians, while still finding the time to laugh at the clowns in between.
My kids chattered about the circus all the way home…and then again the next day…and the next. Memories were most definitely made. I don’t think they’re going to forget their trip to the circus anytime soon. I’m so very glad that we went!
