For the past two weeks my kids have been praying for snow. Each day that we were on vacation in South Carolina and Georgia they’d wake up and ask me if it was cold enough for snow or if snow was expected, only to be met with a “no”…and have the projections show snow for the weekend after we left. That’s right, snow is expected in the Southeastern United States starting this weekend, and has already arrived in lots of other places in country! While we in South Florida aren’t expecting any of the fluffy white power, we are expecting some cooler temperatures, and for that I’m grateful. This has been the hottest winter that I can remember, and I for one could use a bit of a break from the record setting high temperatures. It may not be snow, but it’s good enough for me!
For those of you who are looking at a snow day or two this weekend, I’ve put together a list of my favorite snow themed books, all of which are available for $7 or less (some are free for kindle users!) and prime eligible so they’ll be there in plenty of time before the snow actually hits. Now you’ll be armed with activities and new books when the kids start saying their bored! Even if you’re not expecting snow, these are fun additions to your library that your kids will love!
Follow Clifford the puppy as he leaps into his first winter with fluffy white snow, a sled ride, and exciting winter fun in Clifford’s First Snow Day. Although intended for kids in kindergarten and 1st grade, these books are a favorite of kids young and old!
School is cancelled and it’s time to play in Fancy Nancy: There’s No Day Like a Snow Day! See Nancy and her two friends, JoJo, Bree, and Freddy, have “snow” in the winter wonderland outside, catching snowflakes, sledding, and making snow angels. This book even comes with stickers so you can make the pages fancy!
A sequel to The Biggest Pumpkin Ever, The Biggest Snowman Ever tells the tale of 2 little mice who want to make the biggest snowman and win the town’s snowman contest. They soon realize that teamwork is the way to go, but still question whether they can win.
Celebrate the wonders of winter with Let It Snow! A fun sequel to Let It Fall, Let It Snow focuses on all the fun things that you can do on a snow day like sipping hot chocolate, sitting by a fire, or playing in the snow. Intended for younger readers of 3-5 years of age, this book has beautiful illustrations that will draw in your little one and might just give you a few ideas on activities for your very own snow day!
Do your kids dream of snow the way mine do? If so, The Night Before the Snow Day is the book for you! The snow is falling hard, but what will the next day hold? Will the town be snowed in? Will there be a snow day? Kids who dream of snow will identify with the excitement in this book!
Rhyming text and funny pictures fill the inside of There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow! Soon to be a favorite in your house, this book contains a surprise ending that no one in your family will be expecting!
Best selling author and artist James Dean does it again in Pete the Cat: Snow Daze! This book follows Pete as he has not one, not two, but several snow days in a row. While he initially enjoys making snow cats (because what else would Pete The Cat make?) and sipping hot chocolate, Pete The Cat soon realizes that there is such a thing as “too many snow days”.
Intended for pre-readers and new readers, The Jacket I Wear in the Snow brings a fun rhyming twist to all those clothes that you need to wear when you go out to play in the snow. Book will help your kids name and remember the layers…although they still might not love putting them on.
Henry and Mudge is one of my daughter’s new favorites, so Henry And Mudge And The Snowman Plan had to make the list. We just ordered this one yesterday and it’s due to arrive on Friday, just in time for cooler temperatures to hit!
Available in both paperback and board book, Mouse’s First Snow shows how Mouse enjoys the simple pleasures of a snow day – sliding down hills, building snow structures, skating, and more. This one is a favorite for my preschooler, and although sure to be enjoyed by all, is definitely geared towards a younger audience.
Happy reading! Enjoy the snow!
