This post is written in collaboration with Walmart and The Motherhood. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Did you know that 48 million people in United States, including 15 million children, struggle with hunger? It’s a scary statistic. And based on that statistic, it’s more than likely that there are people in your own community that are struggling with hunger right now. While food drives around the holidays certainly help provide food for those in need, they far from eradicate the problem. Because hunger isn’t just an issue that strikes around the holidays, it’s a year long concern. But now there’s an easy way for you to help with Walmart’s Fight Hunger Spark Change program.
Committed to providing meals to those in the community who need help the most, Walmart has teamed up with well known brands like Campbell Soup company, General Mills, Kellogg Company, PepsiCo and the Kraft Heinz Company to start the Fight Hunger Spark Change campaign. The program is simple, for every participating item purchased 9 cents will be donated to Feeding America. That may not seem like a lot of money, that’s the amount it takes to secure one meal on behalf of a local food banks. It’s as easy as that, one item purchased between now and April 25, 2016 equals one meal for someone in need. The donation will automatically be made.
Participating products are ones that you probably already use on a daily basis in your own home, like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese 5 pack, Raisin Bran Crunch Value Size, Swanson’s Chicken Broth, Cheez-It Original Baked Snack Crackers, and many more (you can see a full list here). Those Kellogg’s Rice Crispy Treats that make the perfect lunchbox filler? Yep, on the list. The McCafe Premium Roast Medium Coffee K-Cup Packs my husband loves? Yep, on the list. The Pace Ready Meals that I rely on for those busy weeknights? Yep, on the list! There are so many items that we use on a daily basis included in the participating product list that I can buy in my regular shopping and help people in need at the same time.
And when you get to the register, you can add an additional donation in the amount of $1, $2, $5, or any amount of your choice to your grocery total for even more giving. Walmart’s goal in the Fight Hunger Spark Change campaign against hunger is to provide 75 million meals to local food banks between product purchases and donations made at the register. Certainly with 140 million customers walking through the doors each week this is more than attainable.
Can’t make it to the store? That’s okay, donate online using your social media. Use #FightHunger on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, share or like posts with #FightHunger on Facebook, or show your support on Walmart.com/fighthunger. There are even unique Snapchat filters in select stores. For online support, Walmart will donate 90 cents, or enough for 10 meals, to Feeding America (up to $1.5 million), which is in addition to Walmart’s $1.5 million initial donation. That’s a total of $3 million!
There’s so much good that can be done this April at Walmart, but hurry, because the Fight Hunger Spark Change program ends April 25, 2016. Please join me in feeding the community!
