If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen a lot of softball in my feed recently. I feel like I live at the fields. Practices, games, team pictures and meetings…I’m at those fields constantly and our visits aren’t short. It’s rare to leave without immediately planning our next trip back. While I was lucky enough to have both girls play on the same team this season, it’s still a huge time commitment, but the happiness on their face when they get a home run or tag someone “out” make all the craziness worth it.
But do you want to know my least favorite part of softball? Being snack mom. I can’t stand being snack mom. From the moment you find out that it’s your week to bring snack, the pressure is on to find something that everyone likes and no one is allergic to. Even worse? This season I forgot my snack day, only to be reminded in the morning that it was my turn to bring snack in the afternoon. So, after dropping the kids off at school, I headed out to Albertsons to find team snack ideas and grab some deals at their Stock Up Sale. It wasn’t long before I saw the Honey Nut Cheerios on sale and had an idea – instead of buying something predictable and pre-packaged, what about cereal treats?Honey Nut Cheerios Softball Cereal Treats! So I grabbed a box of cereal and a can of Progresso Traditional Chicken Noodle Soup for dinner (on sale for $1.28!) and got to work creating the easiest and cutest softball cereal treats!
Ready in about 60-90 minutes (most of which is cooling time), these treats are perfect the perfect softball-themed snack for your team after a victory or hard-fought defeat. I’m happy to report that they were an absolute hit after our game on Saturday, and I’ll no doubt be making them again when it’s my turn to be snack mom next season! Here’s how you can make them:
You will need:
6 cups Honey Nut Cheerios
1 bag mini marshmallows (10.5 oz)
3 Tbsp margarine
White frosting
Red cookie frosting
Step 1 – Place margarine and mini marshmallows in a large microwavable bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute, then remove from the microwave and stir. Return the bowl to the microwave for an additional 30 seconds on high, then remove and stir. Continue heating and stirring on 30 second intervals until the marshmallow and butter mixture is smooth.
Step 2 – Pour Honey Nut Cheerios into the marshmallow and butter mixture. Stir until well combined. Pour into a greased 9×9 dish, pressing down and into the edges with the back of a spoon. Allow to cool completely.
Step 3 – Cut circles out of the cereal treats using a cookie cutter. If you don’t have a round cookie cutter, don’t worry, you can always use the rim of a glass instead!
Step 4 – Frost the cereal treats to look like softballs by first covering with white frosting and then carefully applying the red accent frosting. Allow to sit for about 30 minutes before putting them into the treat bags so the icing doesn’t smear.
Step 5 – Place the softball cereal treat into a treat bag and top with this free softball-themed treat bag topper. Then share with your favorite teammates after a practice or a big game!
And don’t forget to stop by your local Albertsons or other banner store (Safeway, Acme, Shaws, Star Market) to stock up on all your favorite General Mills products before the sale ends on October 13th!
