“Mommy, when are we going to go to the zoo?”
That was the question my oldest daughter asked last week after we finished reading a new book that I’d brought home from the library, which chronicled the adorable (although probably unrealistic) friendship between a baby giraffe and a baby tiger. Ugh. September may mean cooler temperatures in some places, but here in South Florida it’s at least mid-October before it’s comfortable outside. Right now, it’s still 90+ degrees with what feels like 100% humidity each day. Needless to say, the zoo – a primarily outdoor destination – isn’t exactly on the list of places I want to go right now. I will be on my list come late October or November, but now? Not so much.
But then I thought – Why not bring the zoo to them? Surely, I can come up with a school lunch that incorporates some fun zoo animals… And that’s exactly what I did!
Since the tiger was a big part of the book that we’d just read, I decided to make him the focus of this lunch. I created the tigers face out of Nature’s Harvest Honey Wheat Bread (currently on Rollback at Walmart for $1.97!) using the rim of one of my larger drinking glasses. I then placed a few turkey slices between the bread and created his face out of raisins, cheese, carrots, bacon bits, and fruit strips. Roar! My kids loved him and I loved that they were getting a nutritious lunch in an easy, fun sandwich. Baked with whole grains (at least 8 grams of whole grains per serving!) and no artificial flavors, colors, or high-fructose corn syrup, a lunch with Nature’s Harvest Bread is a lunch I can feel good about!
So that’s my creative school lunch for September…but now it’s your turn because Nature’s Harvest is hosting a sandwich art contest on their Facebook Page. This is your time to shine! Did I mention there will be prizes? Oh, yes, there will be prizes!
To enter the contest, all you need to do is create a sandwich using Nature’s Harvest Bread and then visit the Nature’s Harvest Facebook Page to submit your entry! How easy is that?
And for a chance to earn a $5 Walmart Gift Card, check out this 10 minute opt-in shopper research survey (only first 100 people to complete the survey will receive a gift card – U.S. citizens only, must be 18 years or older to participate).
What will you create?
Oh my goodness, I absolutely LOVE this! We are huge fans of the zoo and this is a great way to tie in fun and education with food. There are no words, I will be using this idea. Thank you for sharing!
That is adorable! My kids would go crazy!
