Although going part-time at work has been downright blissful, it came with a hefty pay cut. A cut that we can handle, but one that definitely put a dent into our family’s budget. So each day I try to find a way to stretch our dollars just a little bit further – I coupon at the grocery store, I price compare online, try to find the cheapest wireless plans that will work for us, along with reducing just about every other bill we have. Let’s just say I’m really looking forward to getting our tax return this year.
Recently, someone told me to sit down and make a list of all the bills we have. They said it would give me a good visual of exactly how much money we have going out each month. So one morning, that’s exactly what I did. I tallied it all – utilities, daycare, car payments, rent, everything. And wow, were they right. I could instantly see where money was being spent and, um, overspent. And our cellphone bill was the number one bill that jumped out as being an overspending area. One hundred and ninety dollars for 2 cell phones? And that doesn’t include the actual phone, just our 2 lines service. Each and every month. Eeek. So I circled that bill with the determination to reduce it.
When I started doing research on cheaper wireless plans, I quickly found Walmart Family Mobile’s Lowest Priced Unlimited Plan – unlimited talk, text & web for just $39.88! Actually, there’s an even cheaper plan that only includes talk and text for $29.88, but how’s a blogger supposed to survive without access to the web? And because I need more than one line, I was thrilled to find out that you can add additional talk, text & web lines for $34.88 a piece ($24.88 for talk and text lines). But the real beauty is that you can mix the types of lines that you have on one account. For example, if your child only needs talk and text, but you need talk, text, and web, you can have one of each on the same account. Or two of each. Or any combination you’d like, up to 5 lines. And the account is prepaid, so there are no surprises at the end of the month. Even better? No contracts. Pay for service as long as you want it simply by going through their website to pay your bill (autopay is also available). Simply put, within minutes I had found a way to cut our cell phone bill from $190+ per month to $74.76 – that’s over a 60% savings!
I decided to venture out to Walmart and see what types of phones they had, where I promptly fell in love with the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit. A smart phone featuring a 5 MP camera with LED flash, 3.8″ touch screen, and so, so many apps. All priced under $100. Determined to try something that could save us so much, I picked up the Galaxy Exhibit, a Standard & Micro SIM Starter Kit which is required to activate the phone, and a few accessories – a screen protector kit, car charger, earbuds, a dry bag (because accidents happen and then tend to happen to me), and a colorful case to make it my own and treat myself a little (that tax return should be here any day now…). As I checked out, the employee in the electronics department not only offered to activate the phone, but also offered to give me a quick tutorial on the Galaxy Exhibit’s features. Check out and activation took less than 30 minutes and by the time I left, I not only left with an activated phone, but I also knew how to use it.And I’ve been extremely impressed with it since I purchased it. The calls are crystal clear. The screen is bright and colorful. And I haven’t had any problems with it stalling or freezing on me like my current phone does all. the. time. It charges in a snap and lasts pretty much forever. Although I haven’t tested it, the product description says it has 7 hours of talk time and 600 hours of standby time. All I know is that I’ve kept it on since the moment I purchased it and I’ve only had to charge it once. And oh, the apps! It came with everything that I needed, so I just needed to download the apps that my 4 year old uses (if you ask her, this is her phone, not mine).
Although I’m under contract for a few more months, I definitely think that Walmart Family Mobile is a great way to trim our cell phone budget and I’m so happy with the phone. If you have a tax return coming to you this year and want to treat yourself, make sure to head over to Walmart and check out the Galaxy Exhibit and the Walmart Family Mobile plans that are available!
I’m not sure if I have a refund coming or I have to pay–this bookkeeper (semi retired) has yet to do her taxes! I am stuck in a plan for a couple more years unfortunately but once I am free I will be checking this out for sure!
I, too, am stuck in a contract. I guess that’s why I was SO happy to be able to try out this service for a while… Once I’m free, I’m going with Walmart Family Mobile. Is it wrong that I might actually scream “FREEDOM!” the day my contract is up? LOL
This is awesome info! I had no idea they even had a plan like this!
I will keep this in mind if I get one for my daughter.
I keep seeing Walmart Family Mobile and keep wishing that it was available to us! Unfortunately, Tmobile service around here is less than good and we need dependable service. Maybe Tmobile service will get better by the time our contract is up in just over a year and we’ll have a cheaper option to turn to.
You know, when I was looking at the phone online (before I purchased), it said to put in my zip code and it would tell me if I could use that phone in my area. I put in my zip code and it said that I couldn’t, but when I went to the store, they said I could. Sure enough, it works perfectly. I hope that means that they’re improving their network and adding previously uncovered (or not so well covered) areas! It really is a great plan!
Unfortunately, this runs on Tmobile, which doesn’t exist here. Otherwise, it’s awesome. I’ve enjoyed time I’ve spent on tmobile.
I love how much you’re saving! Definitely sounds like the perfect plan for those working on trimming their budget. #client
