“Jen, he has to go.”

These are the words that my husband has been saying to me for the last 2 months…maybe more.  Because at nearly 5 months old, Everett is still sleeping in our room.

And even I’ll admit – he’s been in our room a little too long.

But every time the topic of moving him to his own room came up, I found a reason not to.  First he was too little.  Then he was too sick.  Then, I went back to work and our normal routine was totally thrown off.  Besides, the mere thought of running back and forth across the house between his room and ours in the middle of the night is exhausting.  EXHAUSTING.  And I’m not too proud to admit that, maybe – just maybe – keeping him in our room was my way keeping him little.  He is, after all, my last baby and a part of me wants him to stay small…just a while longer.

But on the heels of several very rough nights – where it’s become apparent that we might actually be the ones keeping him up (hint: someone snores and it’s not  me) – I talked to my husband and brought up the idea of moving Everett out of our room.  Not as a “we’re definitely doing this” kind of a thing, but really more of a “maybe we should consider it” type of a thing.  No official plans were made, we just discussed the idea.  And, as expected, my husband was thrilled.  I, however, was still on the fence.

And I stayed that way until around 9pm tonight.

Then, much like the decision to move Greenleigh and Hazeline to their own rooms years ago, I decided it was time.  Just like that.  I was ready.  He was ready.  We all needed to give this “sleep in our own rooms” thing a try.  So I plugged in the Safe & Sound Video Monitor that Vtech was so kind to send me months ago and decided to give it a go.  I put Everett in his pack and play drowsy but awake and left the room.  It was kind of strange.  And a little bittersweet.  And just the tiniest bit freeing before I started questioning if this would actually work.  We can handle this separate rooms thing, right?

So it’s official – as of tonight, Everett’s been evicted.  You know…until the wee hours of the morning when he inevitably ends up in our bed.

    SECOND, CUT THE CORD ALREADY!

THIRD, he does NOT need to come in to our bed.

FOURTH, you can not go to prom with him!

my babies stay in our room for the first year. My husband deals with it, but come one year, they are booted. It is easier on a breastfeeding mom, and I am a firm believer in co-sleeping to prevent SIDS. I also understand the last baby thing. My last one actually stopped sleeping in bed with me around 5 months, and that was a first. She grew up much faster than I was ready for. She is now almost 15 months and is crazy independent. 🙁
