We learned fairly early on that Everett loves white noise. It was probably around the second week of his life when I just couldn’t get him to calm down. After several minutes of him losing his mind, I wrapped him in a blanket and started shushing (in case you’re unfamiliar, it sounds like “shushhhh”) in his ear. And sure enough, he loved it. In less than a minute I had him calmed down and minutes later he was asleep. I was shocked at how quickly it worked. Problem was, I couldn’t stand by his napper shushing all night while he slept. We were able to use the white noise feature on his swing during the day, but I needed to find something for nights. So when Marpac offered me a Dohmie serious sleep baby bundle (including a Dohm sleep conditioner!) to review, I accepted so quickly it probably made their heads spin.
The Marpac Dohmie serious sleep bundle includes everything that you child needs to get a good night sleep – a Dohm sound conditioner, Buddy the Bee Finds his Zs storybook, and Sleep Training 101 by the National Sleep Foundation. The Dohm consists of 3 main parts: the cap, the collar, and the base. The cap has 8 small holes and can be twisted from side to side. Twisting the cap determines how many holes will be exposed. When it’s all the way open, all eight holes are open allowing the maximum amount of air through; twist the cap to the right and the holes begin to cover. When you twist the cap to expose more holes or fewer holes, the volume and tone of the sound conditioner changes. When turned all the way to the left (closed), only 3 holes remain uncovered. The collar works the same way, in that you can twist it from side to side , but it’s openings are slanted and vary from wide to narrow. Just like with the cap, as you turn the collar, you will hear the tone and volume of the Dohm change.Through trial and error of twisting the cap and collar, you determine your personalized Dohm setting.
It’s important to note, that while the openings in the cap and the collar are intended to be covered (either in whole or in part), the holes in the base serve as an air exhaust and are not intended to be closed at any time. I made sure to leave room on all sides of my Dohm, so as not to risk them getting blocked.
As a lover of white noise, it goes without saying that Everett loves his Dohm. I turn it on and it instantly calms him. But as a mom, I love the Dohm too. I love that it has a plug. We have too many baby things in our house that require batteries. And those batteries are constantly dying on me at critical times. Sometimes I have replacements, sometimes I don’t, which means we could have to go without certain baby equipment at certain critical times. Not so with the Dohm. As long as I have access to a plug, I can use it. And it’s light enough that it can be carried from room to room if necessary.
I also love that it’s easy to use. I had to play with the settings for a few days before we found the right tone and volume, but after that it was smooth sailing. I would advise that you use it on a flat surface though (not an uneven wicker surface like in the photos above). I find that I occasionally get vibration when it’s on the wicker, but that it doesn’t happen when I place it on a flat surface. I also like that it’s the perfect volume – just loud enough to drown out the noise in our house (i.e. his very noisy sisters), but low enough to provide calming background noise. But best of all the Dohm is part of a sleep bundle. It’s an entire package, including adorable storybook and sleep tips, geared towards getting your baby a better night’s sleep. Because when my baby sleeps well, so do I.
If you have a new baby or child who likes white noise, I definitely recommend the Dohmie Serious Sleep Baby Bundle! Interesting! I never thought to use it while I was working – I just might try that!
forget the baby! I would love to have some white noise all night long 😉
My kids loved white noise as a baby and still do, in fact the whole house does.
I used to have one of these for myself when I would travel. It would help me sleep in any hotel room and a get a good night’s sleep. I’m sure it’s amazing for babies!
