After last month’s delicious shipment from the California Wine Club, I think it would be fair to say that I was pretty eager to receive my next shipment. And when it finally did arrive, I was very excited to see that December’s wines were not only gift wrapped, but were from Santa Barbara, California. I know that Santa Barbara is known for their wines and I’ve been there several times (fun fact: When I was about 7 years old, I declared to my dad that I was going to get married in Santa Barbara. Good thing for him that I changed my mind because I had also picked the most expensive hotel in the area for my reception.), but I’m not all that familiar with their wineries. So I was happy to peruse the feature of Daniel Gehrs Wines in this month’s issue of Uncorked as I opened up the wine. The beautiful 4 page feature told the story of Dan Gehrs, a man determined to make the wines his way, and even included a photo of the winery cat Cleo, who likes to greet winery visitors.
As always, this month’s shipment included 2 wines – a Chenin Blanc (white) and a Merlot (red). Naturally, I gravitated towards the white, which Gehr has described as his personal favorite. Although I’ve tried a lot of different wines, I’ve never had a Chenin Blanc before so I didn’t know what to expect. After a long day, I curled up with a blanket and a Christmas movie and tried this fabulous wine. It was a bit drier than I normally like, but it had a great flavor. Very floral. And it went perfectly with the cheddar cheese and Triscuits I was nibbling on. A couple nights later, I finished the bottle with some pizza and it tasted just as delicious.
I’m so glad that I got a chance to try this amazing wine and learn more about this mom & pop owned winery, that I otherwise never would have known about. But I guess that’s what the California Wine Club is all about – award-winning wine, 100% satisfaction guarantee, and the expertise that it takes to find these hidden gems.
So will wine be part of your holiday celebration? It should be! I would probably start with the Premier Club, but I dont see if that can be both red and white or sparkling wines. So then I might go with the reorder wines and order the Azienda Agricola Baracchi 2009 Brut Rose, the Le Vigne Winery 2007 Le Vigne di Domenico Paso Robles Cabernet Franc, or if they get a new Riesling in, order that… many of my friends now are also getting more interested in Rieslings.
