Halo: Cleaning Up The Air You Share {Review & Giveaway}

I’ve been sick for a week now.  I’m pretty sure it’s The Plague.  Okay, well maybe not The Plague, that hasn’t been around for a while, right?  But after a week of feeling sick, having no voice, and struggling through work, whatever the official name is of what I have – I’m ready for it to be over.  Yesterday.  You know who’s also ready for my cold to leave our household?  My husband.  Poor guy.  I’ve managed to get Hazeline sick already, so in addition to taking care of me and picking up the slack around the house, he’s also having to take care of her and how extra whiny she is lately.  I know they say “in sickness and in health”, but I’m sure my husband’s now wondering if there was supposed to be a limit on how long that “sickness” can last before he bails.  Because the bottom line is, we’re sharing the same air and and all the germs contained in it.  My cold is no doubt aiming for him next.
And then I remembered a booth that I visited back in August at the BlogHer Expo Hall.  It was for a new product called Halo, designed to kill airborne germs that you breathe in.  No, I wasn’t worried about colds back then, it was summertime after all, but as someone who works in an office where sick days are frowned upon, I’m always looking for a way to stay healthy.  Especially when other co-workers come to work sick.  For about 10 minutes, I chit chatted with a gentleman in the booth about Halo – what it does, how it works, and what makes it work.  He threw a lot of medical terminology at me (mainly because I had asked questions that required it), but it all boils down to this: three sprays of Halo into the back of your throat, circulate it around the back of your mouth, then swallow.  After you’re done, go about your normal activities and Halo will protect you and provide sustained antiseptic action against airborne germs you breathe in for up to 6 hours.  And when you consider that the average person takes over 17,000 breaths a day, that’s a lot of protection!

It sounded like a neat product.  He gave me a sample or two and I went on my merry way.  When I returned home, I tucked the samples away in the medicine cabinet for the day when we would need them.  Little did we know that it would come over Thanksgiving weekend (of all the times for a cold to strike, it had to be the holidays!).  So this past weekend, I went and pulled out our samples of Halo.  I handed the bottle to my husband and said, “Here, try this!  You can’t get sick, you just can’t…”.  If he did, who would take care of Hazeline and I?  Who would pick up the slack around the house?  Two parents sick in the same household is never a good thing.  So he took the bottle and tried it.  Even though I was the reason he had to take it and was already sick, I decided to try some too.  Couldn’t hurt, right?

I had so many preconceived notions of what this product was going to be – it would taste bad, it would create a film in my mouth that I’d be able to feel, I probably wouldn’t be able to eat after I used it, it would numb my mouth, so on and so on.  But today, I’m happy to report that they were all wrong.  And this is one of those times where I’m thrilled to be wrong.

We tried the berry and it really does have a berry taste.  As you swallow it, you can taste a slight “medicine” taste (sorry, there’s no better way to describe it), but it’s light and once swallowed, it’s gone.  After you swallow it, you would never even known that you took something.  It doesn’t numb your mouth, the taste doesn’t linger, and eating and drinking weren’t a problem at all.  The only issue you might have is forgetting to take your next dose after the 6 hours are over, since it works so quietly.  You can take it up to 3 times per day, and you should take it anytime you think you’re going to be exposed to other people’s germs – planes, buses, conferences, work, anywhere and everywhere you might be exposed…like at your own house when your spouse appears to be trying her best to get you sick.  And I love that even Greenleigh can take Halo, because in addition to their adult flavors, they also carry a children’s formula in grape (all of which are available at CVS, Wal-Mart, Target, and a handful of other places).  The best part is that it’s clinically proven to work.  But let’s forget studies for a second – Despite my germs’ best efforts, my husband hasn’t gotten sick.  We are a true test case and can verify that it really works.  Halo gets our stamp of approval!
