Last Saturday was a particularly rough day for me as a mom. Greenleigh and Hazeline were testing every limit and midway through the afternoon, I realized I had forgotten to RSVP to a birthday party for one of the kids in Greenleigh’s class. Unfortunately, the party was that same day. The girls’ bedtime couldn’t come fast enough. I had plans to watch a football game and a friend was planning to stop by to join me for a girls night in. I got Greenleigh and Hazeline tucked in and headed downstairs to try and relax a little. And then I realized it – I had wine in the house. And not just any wine, wine from the California Wine Club, so it was guaranteed to be good. My evening was suddenly looking up…
Started in 1990 by Bruce and Pam Boring, the California Wine Club is a company designed to show you the best of California wineries. And not the big names you already know – they intentionally seek out small, mom and pop run wineries that you would never know about if it weren’t for their leg work. Membership in the California Wine Club costs nothing and can be cancelled at anytime for any reason, but the best part is that every bottle of wine they send you is 100% guaranteed! If you get a bad bottle of wine, just contact them and they’ll immediately reship a replacement or refund your money. They have 4 wine of the month clubs to choose from: Premier Club, Signature Series, International Selections, and the Aged Cabernet Series. Shipments normally consist of 2 bottles, but 3 and 4 bottle shipments are available (they pay the cost of the extra shipping), and all come with a copy of their monthly news letter Uncorked.
As a part of my membership, they sent me two bottles – one red and one white. The white was a 2008 Sauvignon Blanc and the red was a 2009 Tempranillo, and both were from the Robledo Family Winery, which I hadn’t heard before.
I’ll admit, I’m not a huge drinker, but I do enjoy a glass of wine. And this wine was delicious. The Sauvignon Blanc was a perfect balance – not sweet, not dry. It had a crisp finish that I enjoyed, but wasn’t the “bite” that some white wines can have. It was light and easily paired with the appetizers we had made. I had a small sip of the red wine and it was good, but I left the real tasting of the Tempranillo to my friend Penny, because I’m not a lover of red wine like she is. And it seems that she enjoyed her red as much as I liked my white, because our glasses were refilled several times throughout the evening. Over the course of a few hours, we watched football, we chatted, and laughed about all the silly things we’ve done in the past. What started as a stressful day for me, had been transformed into a great one. In the end, it was agreed that our wine from the California Wine Club was the perfect addition to our girls night in. I can’t wait for next month’s shipment!
