My girls are so over getting their pictures taken. But taking the pictures? That they like. Combine that with their love of dolls and you have what could be the best toy ever. Exaggeration? Not even a little. Allow me to introduce you to the Barbie Photo Fashion Doll:
What makes it different from every other doll on the market? It’s a camera! Seriously. Inside of that iconic, well-dressed doll is a 0.3 megapixel camera that your little girl can point and shoot to their heart’s content. After the pictures are taken, you can upload them to your computer or display them on Barbie’s shirt. You see, it turns out that the plain black shirt she’s wearing is not plain at all, it’s actually a backlit LED screen, designed to display the precious memories your daughter creates with her camera. Barbie has always been fashion forward, you know. 
Okay, I’ll admit, I first opened this box when Greenleigh was asleep. What you may not know about me, is that I’m an avid Barbie collector. Don’t laugh. I have dolls dating back to the early 1980s still in their pristine boxes. Did I mention that I have around 100 of them? ‘Cause I do. But this one was not going to stay in a box. Not at all. I opened it while Greenleigh was asleep so I could get a picture of it while it was still in the box and get a little time to play with it myself…I mean, get to know the features. And there are so many – borders, props, display settings, oh my! There are so many things this doll can do. I just knew Greenleigh was going to love it. And sure enough, within minutes of waking up in the morning Greenleigh found this doll and made it her new best friend (whether Barbie liked it or not).
Armed with her new BFF camera, Greenleigh decided it was time to get out of the house and take some pictures. And who can blame the kid? Natural light is where it’s at. So I figured it was the perfect time to head to the pumpkin patch to get a pumpkin or two and snap some photos. Awww…My baby’s first photo shoot. I’m pretty sure this is a milestone of some sort. Must. Find. Baby. Book.
And as I took pictures, so did she. Here are a few of the pictures taken with her Barbie Photo Fashion Doll Camera:
As you can see, the camera can take really good pictures – check out those pumpkins in the middle! You can see the individual indentations! But you have to remember that these pictures are only 128×128 pixels, so if you don’t have the perfect amount of light or a great angle, they may appear blurry (like the picture on the far left). Also, due to their size, I wouldn’t recommend printing them, but they are ideal for Barbie’s shirt. And the borders, like the purple one seen in the two pictures above, add a little extra fun to her shots.
After we left the pumpkin patch, Greenleigh held on to her new friend. Here are a few of the pictures from her day.
As I sorted through the pictures that she took, I realized that I was viewing the world through her eyes. These are the pictures that she wants to take. These are the people and things she sees everyday. This is what she wants to remember…for a while at least. As someone who loves photography, I’m excited to watch her take pictures of the world around her.
I’m going to let her loose with the camera for another week or two and see what she captures. I’ll post an update soon!
