Don’t Judge Me By My DVR

Last night I reached for the remote control and flipped on the television.  Much to my surprise, the television was on the National Geographic channel.  It was at that point that I remembered Erajh had a short day and came home early.  Suddenly the channel setting made sense; his television choices are always so educational…unless it’s sports, and even then sometimes it’s educational because he watches all the sports documentaries.  Anyway, I quickly changed the channel and proceeded to do my nightly catch up of what’s in my DVR.  Unfortunately those selections are not nearly as educational as the National Geographic channel.

But to me, that’s okay.

Listen, I work full time and raise my kids, so at night if I want to watch something that rots my brain – so what?  I don’t subject my kids to it.  Wait, technically I do watch episodes of Toddlers & Tiaras on Saturday Mornings if Hazeline wakes up before 7:30am, but I think that’s only fair considering I’m up before 8am on a weekend.  Unless I put her in one of those ridiculous outfits and do her hair so that it stands 10 feet up in the air, I think we’re okay.  One episode a week won’t kill her.  Besides, maybe it will provide encouragement for her to sleep in?  Let’s hope.

Today as I was sitting at lunch, I asked a co-worker when the new season of Beverly Hills 90201 was starting.  Before I got a response, another co-worker chimed in, “I don’t know that I’d admit to watching that, Jennifer.”

Why not?  Who cares?  Why should I be judged for my television choices?

I’m a working, 30-something, professional mom and totally not ashamed to admit that I watch a little trashy tv here and there.  And 90210 isn’t even close to the worst of it.  I’ll freely admit that I’ve watched 2 entire episodes of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.  I probably would have watched more if they had it available On Demand, but alas, they don’t (Seriously, what’s up with that, Comcast?).  And there are so, so many more shows that I could add to that list:  Secret Life of the American Teenager, Teen Mom (may you rest in peace), Beverly Hills Nannies, Switched at Birth, the list goes on and on.   Because at the end of the day, that’s what I need.  I don’t feel guilty about watching them.  And I don’t even want to consider living life without my trashy tv.

Trust me, there are tons of reasons to judge me, but my DVR shouldn’t be one of them.

Any not-so-educational shows that you love?  What are they?  No judgment here, I promise.

  1. Don’t feel bad about watching shows that your co-workers don’t think or cool or unacceptable or nerdy! I watch Beverly Hills Nannies, Pretty Little Liars, Glee—just to name a few, along with The Voice. Being a working mom, too, I usually watch shows that I can relax to.

Don’t feel bad…I too am a working mom in my (late) thirties. I also have “Secret Life,” “Switched at Birth,” and “90210” in my DVR. I also spend most summers addicted to the new cast of Big Brother. So hey, whatever helps you relax after the kids are asleep is just fine. 🙂

Oh my gosh- don’t feel bad! I’m a working mom, mid-thirties, and some of my favorites are Switched at Birth, Teen Mom (kinda sad it’s over *sniff*), Beverly Hills Nannies, Pretty Little Liars- I could go on. I don’t do drugs, I’m not an alcoholic- this ‘crap’ TV is my addiction. And I love it. It’s what I need to de-stress after a long day, and no one should judge anyone for it!

All good shows – I don’t blame you for watching them! 🙂

Anyway, I work for Comcast I just wanted to let you know that we only upload the content the networks provide. I would suggest reaching out to the broadcast station regarding the unavailable show that you wanted watch on Ondemand.

      Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I didn’t realize that’s how it was done. Hmmm…interesting. It looks like I have a bone to pick with TLC. I need something to get me through those early weekend mornings with my 18 month old now that I’m out of Toddlers & Tiara episodes!

Haha! I’m totally with you! I swear sometimes I feel my brain cells dying after an episode of Secret Life or How I Met Your Mother. And I won’t even go into how I feel after watching Real Housewives of Jersey and OC lol. And you know we’re not the only ones, otherwise these shows wouldn’t be so popular!

Thanks for linking up with the GtKY hop!

I think we must be long lost sister’s or something. I feel the same way you do about TV. I watch 90210, Vampire Dairies, Hart of Dixie, Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, and those are just the guilty pleasures. My DVR is constantly running out of room, because I never had time to watch anything and yet there is so much I want to watch. LOL My husband always shakes his head at all the “teen” stuff I watch – I try to tell him it keeps me young. LOL

We have the same scenario at my house, with my wife loving the Reality/HoneyBooBoo/Housewives stuff, and me with the National Geographic/Sports etc. I have the Hopper from DISH though, and with over 2,000 hours of recording space, AND a fantastic On-Demand library, we can watch, and record anything we like. It’s so easily-organized, and PrimeTime Anytime even records every PT show on all four major networks automatically. I was selected by DISH to do an employee beta-test of the Hopper, and it has changed the way we record and watch forever. We don’t argue about who gets the DVR, since every TV in the house can access the main DVR playlist. It’s easier and a lot more fun.

OMG – Some nights, I have to record on two separate DVRs to get everything we want to watch. Where do I start? My guilty pleasure is almost anything on ABC Family – Secret Life, Switched at Birth, Make It or Break It (RIP), Greek (RIP), Bunheads, etc. I also love anything Teen Mom or Teen Mom2, used to be all about the Real Housewives on Bravo, but I grew bored of the same crap different day. I love Glee, Modern Family, The New Normal, The Big Bang Theory, The Middle, Suburgatory, The Office, Up All Night, 90210, Gossip Girl, HIMYM, Hart of Dixie…I could go on. I also love some serious dramas like The Good Wife, Parenthood (LOVE!), Greys Anatomy, Private Practice, Blue Bloods, etc. Looking at this list, I think I might be addicted to TV. I’m still trying to figure out if any new shows are worth adding to my DVR rotation. I get to all of these eventually, sometimes we have plenty to watch during the rerun seasons. 🙂 It’s ok to enjoy trash tv…you gotta decompress somehow.

Oh how I miss Greek. Like, really, really miss it. And Make It or Break It and Teen Mom too. Why must they get rid of all the good shows?
