There is a rule in our house that I am not allowed to go to garage sales. This is particularly sad for me because I love garage sales. My husband’s motto is, “If they don’t need it, neither do we.” As much as I hate to admit it, he might have a point. We have been out of space in our townhouse for quite sometime, and there just isn’t room for much more. I have been trying to donate/eBay/craigslist items as we get new ones, so the clutter doesn’t grow anymore than it already has, but I’m not all that consistent about it.
There is one exception to the No Garage Sale rule though – a large consignment sale hosted by a local club for families with multiples. It is a once a year event where I can let my inner garage sale spirit go nuts. The sale goes from 9am to 1pm, but the best part is that everything goes half off at noon. This year I tried to keep it under control. I bought a few clothes for each of the girls, all of which were still brand new with original tags still on. All the clothes seemed to be in the $1-$3 range, but I only paid half of that. Yea! Greenleigh immediately fell in love with a tricycle which was a little steep at $25, but much more reasonable at noon when it became $12.25. It looked like it was barely used, and therefore a steal I couldn’t pass up. But I couldn’t leave without getting something for Hazeline, so when I saw a practically brand new Fisher Price mailbox for $3 I was in! Here are the girls with their new items:
So much happiness for so little money! Greenleigh wants to take her tricycle everywhere with her now, which is tough because she isn’t consistent at peddling. This results in a lot of work for me. Totally worth it when you see how excited she is, but wow, lots of strained muscles. I also never really thought about getting her a helmet, but I need to do that. I can’t believe my child is already to the point where she needs a bike helmet!
So while I may not be the next person to find a Picasso under a picture of dogs playing poker purchased at a garage sale, at least I was able to enjoy my one day a year and get some great new toys for my kids. Glad I got that out of my system.
They look so happy with their purchases!!! Awesome!
I think every women is the same way.. I can’t see a sale I have to get something..lol … { following your RSS and Twitter from WHiMsiCal Wednesday }
Again with the precious smiling girls!! So happy they are, I love it.
I bought Baylor a trike and helmet at 15 mos…since he was speaking like a 30 year old I just assumed he would be a prodigy in every other way. 🙂 HAAAA, that child cannot peddle that thing to save his life and he is almost 3. There is a 3 year old girl whizzing around our neighborhood on one of those crazy split-hinged scooters. Baylor just plays with rocks. :-/
I don’t have to tell you that I am a garage sale junkie, I don’t know how people restrain themselves.
Perhaps you should tell me when you are going to go garage sale-ing and I could plan a trip to visit? Just don’t tell my husband. 😉
My husband would totally say the same thing, though he was very happy when I found one of those big kitchens and black and decker tool/building systems on craigslist for free!
See – you can find some really great stuff at garage sales and craigslist! I keep trying to remind him of this, but it hasn’t worked yet.
I just went to a giant family swap meet today & got a “smart trike”for my one year old…I love events such as these!
