My kids have been back in school for almost a month! I can hardly believe it! I feel like it was just yesterday that we were buying school supplies and getting new school clothes. So far, they seem to be loving this school year – they both got great teachers and absolutely adore their school. But with a new school year comes homework, projects, and independent reading…which can be a tough sell after months of carefree summer days. Luckily, National Geographic Children’s Books was kind enough to send me some new titles for our library to help with those tasks.
Designed to get (and keep) kids engaged, National Geographic Kids books are filled with big beautiful illustrations and graphics, along with information that will make homework easier. These new titles include:
Real or Fake? – Can you mail an unpackaged coconut via the United States Postal Service? Did China build a secret city for 1,000 people on the sea floor? Is there really a type of bird with tiny, useless wings, hairlike feathers and nostrils at the END of its beak or is it just a hoax? Real or Fake tests your detective skills to determine which stories are real and which, in fact, are fake (oh, and yes, you CAN mail a coconut, China did NOT build an underwater city and that bird is not a myth! It is a kiwi!). Also included are history’s greatest hoaxes, secrets behind a good fake, internet urban legends, and crazy headlines.Mastermind – In this interactive book kids learn about what type of thinker they are and are given the chance to exercise different parts of their brains with games, tests and puzzles. As kids work their way through the book completing experiments, brain teasers, mazes, quizzes and games, their efforts (and smarts!) are rewarded with a Certificate of Mental Achievement declaring them as a Certified Mastermind.
National Geographic Kids Almanac 2017 – This latest edition of the New York Times best selling book is THE gold standard in nonfiction “edutainment” and features not only the latest discoveries in the worlds of technology, conservation and nature, but also grabs kids with cool weird-but-true facts, activities to keep ’em busy all summer long and amazing animals from around the world.
Everything Sports– Packed with big, bold pictures and graphics and featuring a diverse array of athletes (men and women of all races, young and old,) Everything Sports not only includes the most popular sports such as baseball, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, but also features the more extreme and quirkier sports like parkour, wakeboarding, fencing, curling, and table tennis. The book also dedicates several pages to the Olympics.
My kids are a little shy of the 8-12 recommended age group for these titles, but absolutely love them. Greenleigh was drawn to Mastermind right from the start, which doesn’t surprise me because she really enjoys puzzles and mazes in general. Hazeline, on the other hand, seems to really enjoy the National Geographic Kids 2017 Almanac, which I think is mostly for the pictures. I’m sure that the Almanac is going to end up helping a ton with homework later this year – it has so much information included! Each book is packed educationally rich information while keeping it fun and interesting. These are books that they not only want to read, but they’re books that they want to share with friends. Just this week Greenleigh asked if she could bring the Everything Sports book to school for their unit on teamwork. I couldn’t help but say yes. They are such fabulous new additions to our library!
