As I looked through some of the stats for my blog yesterday I noticed an overwhelming number of searches regarding sending kids to their grandparent’s house over the summer, all of which seemed to land on this post from many years ago. It’s strange how a post that I wrote years ago – as a new blogger with absolutely no knowledge of search engine optimization whatsoever – still manages to still get picked up by search engines. Regardless, it was a post that I wrote from the heart as a very conflicted, still somewhat new parent completely unsure of what to think on subject, so I suppose an update of sorts is in order. Because Camp Grandma, as we now call it, is pretty great – for all of us.
We began sending the girls up to my in-laws’ house 3 summers ago. We started with 5 days and then increased it to 2 weeks and this year upped it to 3 weeks. Three weeks! Yes, I know, it’s a long time. And I’d be lying if I didn’t say that at first I was worried that it was a bit too much time. But in reality, it ended up being the perfect amount of time. Because 3 weeks allowed plenty of time for a week of Vacation Bible School, trips to the zoo with their aunt (I wish I had a better picture of Greenleigh feeding a giraffe to show you, but unfortunately I don’t),
and playtime at the local children’s museum.
There were also trips to skating rinks, libraries, and more than one visit to Chuck E Cheese. It would be fair to say that they didn’t hear the word “no” very often…if at all. They loved every single minute of it, and apparently so did their grandparents because about halfway through their 3 week stay, my mother in law offered to keep them an additional week (which unfortunately conflicted with dance camp, so we had to decline).
As you can see, Camp Grandma 2015 was extremely successful. And as beneficial as it was for the girls, it was also beneficial for Everett, providing him with a little extra one-on-one time with us. And oh, the quiet…my house was so quiet. It likely won’t be that quiet again until Camp Grandma 2016. Yes, I’m already planning ahead.
