Ahhh…it’s that time of year again – time to change the clocks. Quite frankly, it’s a time of year that I dread. Don’t get me wrong, I love the extra daylight, but whether it’s spring forward or fall back, time change with kids (especially young kids who don’t quite grasp the concept of time, clocks, or changing the clocks) is hard. Really hard. So I’ve come up with a fool-proof method to make time change easier. Here goes…
Go to a fair or carnival. Any fair or carnival. Cross county/state lines if you have to. Don’t have a fair or carnival? A theme park will do just the same. Just go. Then buy your kids the unlimited ride wristband and stay for a while…like around 5 hours. Let them ride every ride they can possibly ride at least 3 times (this step is essential).
Leave the fair or carnival around an hour before you want them to go to bed. Then go home and do your normal nighttime routine. I promise, they’ll be exhausted no matter what time the clock says.
After we were done with baths, I told the girls to come into the kitchen for a snack before bed. When we got to the kitchen Greenleigh laid down on the floor and said, “Mommy, I just want to sleep. Can I sleep now?” It was 7:35. So I set Hazeline up with a snack (because no matter how tired she is, that kid is never going to turn down food), and we promptly went up stairs to bed.
Mission accomplished. I mean, I’m exhausted, but they were tired enough to not only go to bed at the earlier time, but Hazeline even slept in this morning. That’s a mommy win!
Did you do anything to make the time change easier on your kids? How did they handle the transition?
