Science for Little Ones: Teaching Your Kids About Rain {Guest Post}

Hi everyone!  Today I’m turning the blog over to Becky  from Your Modern Family for a fun and easy science project for little kids.  As a kindergarten teacher and mom to 4, Becky is always looking for ways to keep her kids learning.  And once you’re done here, make sure to venture over to her blog for some great organization and money saving tips.  Take it away Becky!

Hi!  I’m Becky from Your Modern Family  (A blog about raising our kids, organizing our homes and saving money) and I am so excited to be able to share a guest post with you.

I’d love to share a fun kid-friendly activity with you – Teaching your kids about rain!

Kids are like sponges… always ready to soak in information!

When teaching your children about weather, I love to do this with them…

First- introduce some basic concepts:  Clouds, rain, air.  Let them go outside & look at these things.
Come back in and take a vase or empty, clear jar.

Step 1: Fill an empty jar or vase (clear) 3/4 of the way full with water.  This is the AIR.

Step 2: Add some (cheap) shaving cream to the top of the jar.  These are the CLOUDS.

Step 3: Time to add some RAIN.  Take blue food coloring and let your children drip it on top of the “clouds” – you don’t need a lot for this to work.  Explain that when the water builds up in the clouds, it has to fall down.    Watch as the blue food coloring drips through the shaving cream (give it just a minute).

Step 4: Watch the “rain” go into the “air” – it is now raining!

Step 5: extension: Follow this up with a little fun and let your kids spray the shaving cream on an empty counter-top or in a casserole dish (if you want to contain the mess).  Let them draw their names or a fun picture in it.  This is easy to clean up and a great activity for your little ones!

Enjoy!
