The last few nights my husband has had events to attend in the evenings, so the girls and I have had “Girls Night”. We make mac n’ cheese or pop a frozen pizza in the oven and search for something to watch on TV. Inevitably, I head for Christmas movies but there aren’t a ton on television that the girls can really enjoy, so we’ve started relying on our DVD collection. This year, we’ve added The Cat in The Hat’s Christmas movie to our collection, and the girls are loving it!
With Martin Short performing the voice of Cat, The Cat in The Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas follows Nick and Sally as they try to help their reindeer friend, Ralph, find his way home to Freezeyourknees Snowland in time for Christmas. Of course – nothing goes as planned! Instead the Thinga-ma-jigger on Cats flying machine breaks down, and Nick and Sally find themselves in jeopardy of missing their own holiday celebration with their parents. In their journey home, Cat, Nick and Sally run into a variety of animals who all use their remarkable natural talents to guide them.
The first time I put this movie on for Greenleigh and Hazeline, I was making dinner and, admittedly, paying more attention to dinner on the stove than the girls in the adjoining living room. When I realized that it was a little too quiet, I looked up only to see them standing up and staring at the television, instead of sitting on the couch where I had left them. They had been drawn into this movie and it was adorable to watch!
I love the little bits of education that this movie ties in. It teaches lessons on a variety of animals from African bush elephants to bottlenose dolphins to red crabs. Each time, highlighting the animal and it’s special talents…like the elephants’ ability to smell water. Who knew? But it’s not pushy on the educational elements, instead they’re carefully woven into the storyline. Your kids will be learning and not even realize it. And while I expected the movie to rhyme (since it’s Cat in the Hat, after all) I was pleasantly surprised to hear so much music incorporated. My girls just love music, and the silly songs in this movie feed their love for Christmas movies and music. I also think the music helped to keep their attention for the entire 60 minutes of running time. It’s unusual for a show or movie to keep Greenleigh’s attention that long, but this movie did!

This looks cute, and I love anything “Seuss” or “Martin Short”, but I’m finding a ton of great holiday movies on primetime networks and ABC Family. I work late at DISH most nights, so we’ve been doing a lot of DVR recording lately; I found that the PrimeTime Anytime feature automatically records the entire primetime lineup from the four major networks! I also use a tuner to record ABC Family’s ’25 Days of Christmas’, with a great variety of old, new, well-known and lesser-known holiday classics! We make time for family movie night, and it’s great flipping through to see what’s new on the Hopper!
