We struggle with asthma and allergies in our house, especially with Greenleigh. While most kids aren’t diagnosed with asthma until they’re at least 2 years old, Greenleigh was diagnosed at only 10 months. Just before she turned one year old, we were in and out of emergency rooms, doctor’s offices, and even had a weekly standing appointment with a pediatric pulmonologist, struggling to get her to breathe normally.
As a new parent, it was terrifying. She was breathing so hard, I was scared she would stop breathing in the middle of the night. I remember all to well the nights when I would sneak into her room, sit in the glider, and count her breaths, hoping and praying that it would be closer to 40 per minute than 70-75 (her “normal” during that time). I spent hours in her room, just sitting and counting. Thinking about those days scares me a little. She was just so small. Now, two and a half years later, Greenleigh still has what’s classified at moderate to severe asthma, but we’ve managed to find a good balance when it comes to her medication.
When we moved out of our old house, we were stunned to find out that the air that we had been breathing in was anything but clean. The amount of dust we discovered was astounding, and completely unknown to us, there was a water leak that was in Greenleigh’s room causing a mold to form. I started to wonder what affect that had on Greenleigh’s asthma. We became determined to find a way to make sure the air we were breathing was as clean as possible.
We’ve owned air purifiers in the past, but I always questioned whether they were really working. That is, until we started using the Fellowes AP-300PH Air Purifier. From the minute I plugged this air purifier in, I knew it was working. By placing my hand over the unit, I was able to feel the rush of air coming out of the top. Air is going through this unit, being purified by the True HEPA and Sanitized Carbon filters in the process. Impurities like mold, spores, pollen, dust, allergens, odors, and pet dander are being sucked out of the air in my home, and I love it. And the PlasmaTrue Technology neutralizes viruses and germs in the air, which is great since flu season is almost upon us. You don’t have to question whether this purifier is working – you can feel that it’s working. While it’s doing lots of work, you’d never know it because it’s so quiet. Seriously, this thing doesn’t make a peep. I often forget that its even in the room. Originally, I had planned to put this in Greenleigh’s room, but when I saw that it can be used for a room of up to 300 square feet, I decided that the living room was probably a better fit. It’s where we spend the most time as a family, so it would benefit both Greenleigh and my husband (not to mention Hazeline and I, who don’t have breathing problems, but can always benefit from cleaner air).
But the number one thing that I like about this air purifier is that it’s easy. I’ll admit, I read the word “plasma” on the box and worried that it was going to be too high-tech for me. I was sure that it would take a ton of work to set up. I even asked my husband if he would block off sometime one night during the week so he could help me put it together. So imagine how embarrassed I was when we sat down on the couch to take it out of the box and put it together, only to find out that it was already completely assembled. The only thing I needed to do was unwrap the unit, take the filters out of their plastic, and plug it in. And it worked. Instantly, and without any problems. The easy to read screen told me what the unit was doing and the quality of the air in the room, and the fan automatically adjusts to make sure your air is clean.
With the Fellowes air purifier in our house, I feel confident that our air is clean. I’m thrilled to have this as another weapon in our battle against asthma and allergies.

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Fellowes and received a product sample to facilitate my review.
Great review! That sounds like such a scary experience, too! I don’t know how I would handle breathing issues with my son. Sounds like you were definitely a *super mom*. Using this air purifier sounds like it will definitely be a help for your little girl!
I also had an opportunity to review the Fellowes Air Purifier and couldn’t agree more! Our old purifier was too quiet (Did I seriously just say that?) and didn’t provide any “proof” or satisfaction – I had NO idea if it was really working! Now that we have been using our Fellowes for about a month, I am fairly positive it wasn’t! I’ve noticed a great difference in the air quality in our home. My husband is an asthmatic and he’s actually told me that his lungs feel much clearer and “open” when he is at home! :O)
I am glad you are no longer exposed to mold like that. When I lived in an apartment years ago, I went to the ER several times with asthma attacks. Turns out it was mold. Since leaving there, I have been fine. Hope Greenleigh is too.
I need something like this in my house. My dad has COPD and we have pets {not a good combo}. It’s nice to hear that it actually works.
Glad to hear your daughter’s asthma is under control–how scary.
That looks so awesome. We have allergies and asthma in our family, too (although not as bad as you do, wow!) We need to check this out! Thanks!
My mother suffers from allergies and I think this would make a great gift for her. Thank you for sharing!
Sounds great! I will definitely have to look into this!
