Earlier this year I put moving on our short list of things to do in 2012. It wasn’t something I was looking forward to, but something that needed to be done. We are completely and totally out of space – how many times have you heard me say that our house looks like an episode of Hoarders? Because it really does. And I would love to have a yard for the kids to play.
But our situation wasn’t just a case of us being out of room. Like so many houses in this country, our home is in foreclosure. It’s not actually “our” home; we rent. It wasn’t so much we wanted to move in 2012, it’s that we had to move in 2012. Or so we thought. The foreclosure process started around this time last year, but seemed to stall around the holidays. When we still hadn’t heard anything in late spring, we began to relax a little. We probably had until the new year, if we were lucky. So maybe moving in 2012 could come off the list.
And that might have happened, except our landlord just short sold our property. I never saw it coming. So when our current landlord called to say that our new landlord wanted to meet us and view the property (oddly this didn’t happen prior to the sale), I panicked. Why would he want to meet us? This couldn’t be good. And it didn’t help that we don’t have a lease for our current term.
Unfortunately, my suspicions were confirmed when during the meeting we were asked, “Would you consider moving?”. All I could think as the question was posed was, “Sure, I can’t wait to move our 1700 square feet worth of stuff to a new place that I haven’t even found yet, while working full-time and dragging 2 kids along. Can’t flipping wait.” At this point our choices are:
1) Go on a month to month lease for up to 3 months, while we find a bigger place, then move; or
2) Sign a one year lease on a place that we have already outgrown.
Both options suck. And we haven’t even discussed whether he is going to modify our rent payment, but my guess would be that he is. Ideally we would move in 6 months, once the holidays are over and the weather is cooler, but the new owner wasn’t going for it. We have until the end of the month to decide, so we are going to explore option 1.
Needless to say, my night has been spent searching every corner of the MLS. At least I like looking for houses more than I like shopping for cars.
Oh geesh that’s a lot for one day. I hope you find the right place for you and your family and I hope that it proves to be so ridiculously awesome that this will all make sense in the end.
Aloha,

Hi Nicole! Thanks for your kind words. It’s been a pretty crazy couple of days, but your right – hopefully, this will lead us to a bigger and better home for our family to grow.
Also, I’m so, so sorry for linking up my main page to your Wordless Wednesday link up. I meant to link a picture heavy post that I have from earlier this week (okay, technically not Wednesday, but in the same spirit as a Wordless Wednesday post), but apparently I did not. I will be more careful next time. Thank you for hosting!
Wow — what a huge decision to make — but think of all the fun you’ll have decorating! Can’t wait to read your adventures in home buying… if its anything like my 10+ years of home building you are going to have a blast!
