Forever Christmas…In Our Car

It’s been 99 days since Christmas, but try explaining that to my 2 year old (3 in 20 days, but who is counting).  Seriously, try explaining that to her, because everything we’ve tried hasn’t worked.  No matter what we offer to play for her or sing with her, Greenleigh only wants to hear one thing when we are in the car – Jingle Bells.  And no sooner does Jingle Bells end, does she make a request for more Jingle Bells.  I’m pretty sure that she’d listen to it on loop if we’d let her.  Unfortunately for her, we’ve put a limit of once per day on her Jingle Bells consumption.

The strange infatuation began about a week before Christmas and just won’t seem to die.  We’ve tried explaining the Christmas season, and more importantly the fact that it’s been over for quite a while, but she just doesn’t care.  Every single time we get in the car, we must play Jingle Bells.  Well, every time we get into Erajh’s car we have to listen to it, because the only thing I’ve been able to convince her of is that my car is incapable of playing it.  I don’t know why she believes it, but I’m just going to take it as a gift.  As far as I’m concerned, the tradition started in Erajh’s car, and that’s where it’s going to stay.

You can’t just play any version of Jingle Bells though.  She’s very specific.  It has to be from the Michael Buble Christmas Album.  No substitute will do.  Just for variety’s sake (because we know we’ve already lost this battle), we tried to introduce her to other versions, including Jimmy Buffet, James Taylor, and Jim Reeves but at the end of each of their versions she just wants to hear Michael Buble.  And once you play the Michael Buble version, or the “right version” as far as she’s concerned, she gets a huge smile on her face and begins to dance in her carseat.  The party lasts through the entire song and ends in demands for more Jingle Bells.  Not sure how she knows the difference between all the different versions, but she definitely prefers Michael Buble.  Perhaps this is her first crush?  At least she has good taste.

So last weekend, as we were on our way to an Easter picnic, our car went zipping down the highway with the sun roof open and Jingle Bells blaring.  Who cares that it was nearly 90 degrees out?  It may be Easter on Sunday, but it’s always Christmas in our car.

Egg hunt after listening to Jingle Bells - the perfect combo!

Is there a song that your child has gotten oddly attached to?  Or have you ever been stuck in a holiday, like we are?  How did you get your child to part with the song or holiday?

When my youngest daughter was 2 1/2 (she’s 18 now, LOL), she got stuck on the Santa Clause movie. My mom gave it to us around Christmastime and I kid you not, she watched that movie every.single.day until after Easter when my husband finally hid the video from her. LOL.
